  • Urology based program — a fellowship that is two years long and only accepts graduates of ACGME-accredited urology residencies. Gynecology — a fellowship that is three years long and typically accepts only graduates of ACGME-accredited gynecology residencies. However, some of these fellowships will also accept graduates of ACGME-accredited urology residencies; in this type of program, the urology-graduate fellow are required to spend three years in fellowship. Combined Alternating single program — a fellowship that accepts either graduates of ACGME-accredited urology or gynecology residencies in rotating years. These programs rotate between urology to gynecology candidates in alternate years. A urology-graduate fellow will spend 2 years in fellowship; whereas a gynecology-graduate fellow will spend 3 years in fellowship. For these types of program, it is important to identify which specialty candidates are being interviewed each year before progressing to the application process. Combined Non-Alternating single program — a fellowship that is either two or three years long, depending on which specialty candidate matches. These fellowships do not have a specific requirement of which type of candidate to match. These types of programs will match and train an applicant from either specialty for the appropriate amount of time (two for urology, three for gynecology) depending on from which type of ACGME-approved residency the fellow graduated. Parallel dual programs — There are several programs that have two ACGME accredited FPRMS fellowships (one urology based, one gynecology based) at the same institution. Each program accepts graduates of their own respective specialty-based candidates. The duration of the gynecology-based fellowship is 3 years and the urology-based fellowship is 2 years. The fellows in both programs interact with each other by participating in rotations within the other fellowship.
