The 2022 SUFU Special Recognition Award is being presented in recognition of outstanding contributions in understanding lower urinary tract pathology and pathophysiology related to bladder dysfunction inclusive of storage in emptying disorders. Through basic research and translational concept, Dr. Smith has advanced global understanding of the complexity of bladder dysfunction related to aging and degenerative phenomena leading to the extremely common urologic syndromes of over an underactive bladder. His contributions have been sentinel and significant and have reformulated the understanding and concepts related to these disorders.
